Handmade Bags Aren't Just for Fashion

Handmade bags seem to be all the rage right now.  Everywhere you look somebody has one slung over their shoulder or sitting on their laps.  They're often colorful, sometimes quirky, and always deeply individual on a personal level.  In short, handmade bags are just great.

But what many people seem to be overlooking is that not every bag is a fashion accessory.  People do use bags for other things like carting groceries, hording everything that just can't fit in their purses, and even storing knitting.  So the next time you see people rocking handmade bags, think twice about how you could use such a thing.  Not only are you helping the environment and cutting your dependence on nasty plastic bags, you're also showing your personality.

For instance, let us take a look at the versatility of handmade tote bags.  Totes can be used for anything from bringing home the bacon to carrying all of your baby supplies—and who's not going to ask you about your handmade tote bag when you pop over for coffee to show off the baby?  Most of the store bought bags you find are canvas, ugly, and bland.  Handmade tote bags on the other hand are anything but.  You can find them made from just about anything ranging from dyed canvas to plastic and even burlap!

You can even find recycled bags that will do the trick.  They're usually made from industrial cast offs, reclaimed post-consumer product, or cloth but some are even made out of recycled bags—plastic ones  like you'd  find at the grocery store.  Sure plastic bags aren't exactly the greenest of the green but anything that keeps that plastic out of landfills is a step in the right direction.  And if you're crafty, you can even make your own recycled bags.  Just have a look around the Internet and you can find dozens of sites dedicated to do-it-yourself recycled crafting.

Natural fiber or fabric handmade handbags really are best.  They are strong, colorful, and can hold a lot of weight.  They're perfect for carrying all that extra "junk" that you can't live without (but somehow can't fit into a purse.  Another advantage of fabric handmade bags is that they can be when they get grungy—and they will.  You can also find them made from all sort of wild and fun fabric.  In my opinion, handmade bags are really a necessity unless you want to shell out for a backpack.

Eco Friendly Handbags Make a Fashion Splash

While many handbags are still made from leather, reptile, or synthetics, a growing trend—especially within chic fashion houses and even to some extent small boutiques—are eco friendly handbags.  Eco friendly handbags are typically manufactured from either renewable natural resources or recycled or reclaimed materials that are better for the environment all around.

But the eco friendly handbags of today aren't those ugly macramé things you might remember from the seventies.  Nobody wants to bring those polyester nightmares back.  And you don't have to worry about going too hobo chic for your tastes either.  In fact, today's eco friendly handbags can be quite daring.  One small producer even makes hers from the hard covers of discarded pulp fiction novels of yesteryear.  Another boutique owner making eco handbags crafts hers out of vintage tee shirts, with some structural material of course.

But post-consumer recycled materials aren't your only option when shopping for the perfect eco handbag to match your style.  Several manufacturers also produce bags made from industrial scraps such as silk trimmings or canvas discards.  These bags offer the perfect blend of materials with a recycled mentality and are often extremely unique.

Another option is to search for local manufacturers of handmade handbags.  Even if they don't use 100% recycled materials you can still feel good about buying from them because they have a tiny carbon footprint compared to mass produced bags.  And no two handmade handbags are ever alike.

Even if the bag you choose is the same style, color, and size as another, it will have subtle differences that really showcase the artisanship that went into crafting it.  You may even be able to speak directly to the seller and request specific modifications to their standard designs to get something that's totally you.

Most "green" bags are made from natural fibers or fabric.  These fabric handbags offer versatility, unique style, and washability.  Even big name designers like Vera Wang and large scale retail chains like Macys have adopted fabric handbags as a fashion-forward alternative to more "traditional" styles.

Fabric handbags are great for the summer and fall months and can be found in colors and styles that really take a seasonal wardrobe to the nest level.  In fact, most of the handbags showcased on the Today Show's fashion segments in the summer of 2010 were fabric bags.

So, if you're looking for the perfect bag but don't want to burden the environment, think "green" and get yourself an environmentally friendly one.  You'll not only find one you'll love but you'll feel great about it too.

Question by ♥♦Pinches People's Butts♦♥: Ladies: would you be apt to purchase a handmade handbag?
If so, what would you be willing to pay such an item, or what would you charge if you made it?

Example: the item is small and each bead or applique is sewn on by hand individually and it took say a few weeks to make.
