When using a bivy sac are you supposed to put your sleeping bag inside it? of just a mat?
I am thinking about using a bivy sac instead of carrying a tent on my overnight 14er trips. Any advice? never used one
I've used both. I like a tent for extended trips. The advantage of a tent is the size to store your backpack and gear, and hang out in if the weather is bad. Bivy sacs are lightweight, but you don't have much room. I got stuck in the rain with a bivy sack. I stayed dry, but I had to wait for the rain to slow down to get out of my bivy, so my sleeping bag would stay dry.
